Patient Stories

“Right now me and my boyfriend barely make enough to support ourselves. I haven’t been able to afford health insurance or birth control, which really caused this to be necessary, and if forced to keep this child there is no way any of us could handle it monetarily, physically, or emotionally.  I would probably lose or have to quit my job.  On top of that, I already have a four year old with special need and his quality of life would decrease if I was unable to get an abortion.  Also frankly it’s my damn body so purely on principle I should be able to do whatever I want to it without some bigoted, ignorant person who has no idea about my life butting in. So thank you.”

“As a mother of three, the decision to have an abortion affected me in a way that is almost indescribable.  Knowing the potential for life that my body represents is both empowering and overwhelming.  As this time though, the choice to have another child would be selfish and irresponsible.  By invoking my right to have an abortion I am preventing future hardships for my family.  The laws that have come into play recently have affected me more so than the procedure itself.  By preventing me from having a local and timely abortion, I have been forced to travel hundreds of miles on two separate occasions to satisfy lawmakers whose personal beliefs should not hinder my healthcare choices.  My husband and I appreciate the opportunity to participate in family planning regardless of the opinions of others.”

“I came here because our adoption system in the states is horrible; the rates for domestic adoption are miniscule.  I was told that I could not get pregnant because of my endometriosis.  Still I was cautious and took the birth control prescribed to me by my Dr.  I am in no way ready for a child emotionally or just as important financially.  It wouldn’t be fair to bring a child into the world that is born at a disadvantage to live to be part of our poverty stricken society.  I would prefer this soul to be with God rather than have an unfair or more difficult lifetime because of my own inabilities to provide, or even worse ending up in an unfit home or cycling through group homes and our government run system where the child is just a number.  If you love something sometimes the only thing to do is let go.”

“The choice for me to have an abortion has been incredibly helpful, hard, but helpful. My boyfriend has congestive heart failure from a congenital birth defect and neither of us were healthy at the time of conception.  We would never be able to give this baby the kind of financial support it would need if it were to need it.  This decision has been all in the interest of the baby not being able to receive the care it would need and deserves.  My heart breaks but it is necessary.  Thank you for all of your support and kindness!”

“Abortions are going to be performed even if it is against the law. Making it illegal would just put more women at risk for suffering complications.  Sometimes being pregnant is not a choice, sometimes things can occur and a person may not be ready for a baby whether emotional, physical or financially.  What better way than to feel safe going to a clinic where professional people can help you than run the risk of killing yourself by going down an alley to have an abortion performed.”

“I recently gave birth to a baby boy and am not financially stable to care for two newborns.  Professional abortion care is important because I am comfortable with a doctor performing the procedure rather than me risking my life at home trying to abort on my own.”

“Regardless of my situation and/or why I chose to go through with my respective procedure, my life, my body, and my path are mine alone to choose.  I am ridiculously proud to be an American…so much that I decided to give my life to a career doing what I can to protect and fight for our rights as American citizens.  Be that as it may, my right to choose is not only something I exercise, it’s something I work to preserve.  It is not for someone else to decide my path as it is no place of mine to decide for another.”

“My husband and I came to the decision to have an abortion for a few reasons pertaining to our heath.  I am an insulin-dependent diabetic who cannot get my A1C below 7.0.  He has had testicular cancer with radiation treatment and was told not to have any more children.  He is 49 and I am 37, which impacted our decision.  The older a man (over 40) and woman (over 35) are I know risk go up for babies.  My family physician and gynecologist were of no help in finding a clinic.  This left me lost and scared.  Abortion should be destigmatized so people can walk into a clinic, know it’s safe, and that the doctors care about the women’s health.  It should be treated like healthcare by physicians.  Abortion is a personal choice.”

“I came today because of two reasons: I’m prochoice and I can do whatever the f__k I want to.  I’m 40 years old. I have a child that is 22. I’m not going to start all over.  There are many people in this world with kids they can’t even feed.  They are abused and molested and y’all are worrying about abortion.  A woman has the right to do what she wants.”

“I recently became pregnant unexpectedly. I did everything the way I should, protecting myself by using a condom.  Unfortunately, the condom broke.  I thought that this was impossible and that these things only happen in movies.  I said a prayer and hoped for the best but two weeks later I found out I was pregnant.  I went back and forth with the decision of whether to keep the baby or not. But financially I cannot handle that responsibility.  I have a job, so I probably do not qualify for government assistance.  I want to be selfish and keep this baby, but it would not be fair to bring a child into this world to live in poverty.  I am glad that I live in a country where I have the right to CHOOSE!”
