Today, the state of Louisiana followed in the shameful footsteps of Texas. The Louisiana House Health and Welfare Committee agreed to vote on a bill that would shutter most of the abortion clinics in the state, leaving the women of the Gulf Coast without local options. This dangerous extremist bill now goes to the full Louisiana House of Representatives, which could vote on it as early as next week.
As we are now seeing in Texas, these types of bills do nothing to prevent pregnancy. Instead, their only purpose is to create even higher barriers, finally forcing the clinics to close. While affluent women will be able to travel 500 miles to the nearest clinic, poorer women will be unable to access safe abortion care. The end result is that women, unable to travel great distances, are forced to turn to back alley procedures.
