Louisiana lawmakers continue with their war on women, introducing a slew of new bills that work hard to restrict women’s rights. We’ve been following HB 386, which adds a 72 hour waiting period before a woman can exercise her constitutional right to an abortion. No news on that (yet), but something even more disturbing is moving.

The new bill is HB 1019. This cruel bill stops women from terminating a pregnancy for genetic anomalies.

As originally written, this cruel bill could force women to carry a nonviable fetus to term. Imagine getting the terrible news that your baby had a genetic issue that was incompatible with life. Then imagine being told that you had to stay pregnant and risk your health.

They can amend the bill to make it less terrible, but this is the kind of thing that should be entirely the decision of the woman and her family. Instead of keeping the government out of our lives, the Louisiana representatives are focused on scoring political points.

In the end, this is just grandstanding that will lead to a lawsuit against the state. Louisiana has the worst budget crisis in decades. This is a great time to contact your representative and ask them why they are interfering with what is clearly a family decision. Instead of fixing the budget, which should be job #1.
